A classic of science-fiction George Pal and Byron Haskins The War of the Worlds is still effective now as it was back in 1953. The film is based on Herbert George Wells immortal novel of the same name which was published in 1898. It was the first alien invasion story in history. The material was later adapted again by Steven Spielberg. Whose 2005 film contains many homages to George Pal and Byron Haskin's version.

The 1953 film takes many liberties with the source material. The location was moved from Great Britain to the USA, the Martian tripods have become flying machines and the Martians are nothing like the squid-like creatures from the novel. But still the story doesnt lose any of its impact.

The music for this classic was composed by Leith Stevens. Who also scored When Worlds Collide, The Wild One and Destination Moon. His music for The War of the Worlds is quite breathtaking.

The War of the Worlds and its soundtrack belong to Paramount Pictures.

  • It was a early 1950s film man. For its time, this movie was ahead of its time. I love it, such a classic. the crappy special effects actually make the movie good. Special effects arnt everything though, its the story that counts to me. This movies is a masterpiece.

  • The last third of this movie remains some of the most magical and effective moments of my entire moviegoing experience. I saw it when I was six years old on a small black and white TV and I can remember being both scared and incredibly moved by those scenes. I will never forget the giant alien hand dropping from the downed UFO. Your video brought back all of those memories in a very positive way. Great work, SteVin.

  • Brilliant film,my mum was pregnant with me when she saw this film in1953 and i,ve been a sc-fi nut ever since.

  • this is not the musical just the old movie

  • loved those ships.anyone watched the series that was on the 90's??they had the ships in a couple of their episodes

  • It was sad that HG died six years before the film - bet he would have loved it.

Crappy and cheezy yes when compared to modern cg effects. But I am not downgrading this movie in any way. This is a must have classic that overdoes the new War of the worlds. And I am with you on modern CG. Though it looks pretty, I still love the movies made back in the days when studio models were built. I am a retro guy. When it comes to world war II movies, I prefer The Longest Day to Saving Private Ryan.

  • @RifleMan80

    Crappy special effects?

Dude, when this film came out these effects were mind blowing. These effects completely go beyond those of any previous motion picture, or even ones that would be seen for a decade. In fact, I question how well modern CG techniques hold up towards these effects.

  • great stevin !!!

  • Thanks for bringing back some fond memories, guy. This was awesome.

  • A well done piece of video, sir. The underlying Christian subtext aside...This film retains a devastating emotional impact that films like ID4 and Mars Attack sorely lack- no matter how good the special FX.
