The Civil War didn't end when Robert E. Lee surrendered to the north. Well, not for some southerners. After President Lincoln was assassinated, Yanks brought the conspirators to court for trial. Among the convicted: Mary Surratt. What became of her? Did the northern court give the southerners a fair trial? "The Conspirator" movie by Robert Redford uncovers the truth in this long forgotten story of our nation's heritage. Stewart reviews "The Conspirator" in this episode of Movieology!

  • "war of northern aggression". sounthern racist jackass....

  • I am always glad to see a film treatment of a Civil War issue which acknowledges that things were not as black and white as we are supposed to believe. "The Civil War was about slavery".....that's what most learn, and it's just not that simple.

Any number of Southerners attempted to continue the war after the Confederacy officially surrendered. Perhaps the most famous was Jesse James. The issues which led to the Civil War were by no means resolved by the final official battle.

  • Loved the review. It gave me a good idea as to what I should expect.. lovin' you guys at Movieology. Keep'em comin'!!!

  • Thanks for explaining my position, Joe. Yes, the review is by no means exhaustive and only so much can be covered in the time constraints. Rather than making such a bold statement as to confirm the historical accuracy based on my limited knowledge of this particular event, (and since it was not possible with our time and resources to complete an in depth study) I opted to judge the film in a general manner that would be identifiable with most audiences.

  • @philWynk [continued] Filmmakers don't solely aim to mislead; they too might be misled. I know the testimony of one director personally that learned the historical truth after he made a historical film. Just because they make a movie, doesn't mean they are well-informed.

Thanks for encouraging us to be accurate and thorough. This is our aim, but we're not always able to devulge all possible details in 8 minute long reviews. I hope this perspective helps.

  • @philWynk [Continued] Stew points out in the review that based on all appearances and his discernment there isn't any deviance from historical facts. Of course, movies are subject to some interpretation from viewers, as are the known historical facts the filmmakers used to produce the film in the first place. One reason many history-related movies are in error in the first place is because writers and directors are misled too.

  • @philWynk Hi Phil. I'm the other host of Movieology. Stewart would have mentioned it if there wwere any noticeable misleading agendas in the movie. It's not necessary to point out "this film does not have a deceptive agenda" when there really isn't one there in the first place. If others were debating whether there is one when Stewart would have brought it up. Understandable?

  • "For a general audience, the film gave at least the appearance of authenticity?" That tells me precisely NOTHING. OF COURSE it has the appearance of authenticity. Everything does. What I want to know is, does it tout somebody's agenda? Whose? How? Is this a defensible historical point of view, or is the filmmaker merely grinding some modern axe through historical characters who are made to dance to a modern tune?

I'm very disappointed in American Vision. Show some erudition, please.

  • Thanks for the excellent review. I might see this movie because it appears to show a balanced perspective of the War of Northern Aggression or the War Between the States. The cult of Lincoln continues to worship a president who didn't always follow the Constitution.
