... "bastard child" of classical before any other rock genre? You could play Peter Gabriel on cellos just as well... Pink Floyd or Queen have lots of melodies, and more advanced "classical" chord progressions as well.

Other pop genres can be transcribed into other instruments, as well. A lot of "synth pop" is covered on acoustic guitars (and it mostly sounds better), classical is transcribed into metal or techno or samba, country into rock or synth pop... that's just how it is, it doesn't really speak for the genre that other instruments can play it.

Aside from that, Apocalyptica play the same song on CELLOS, but the genre is still the same as Metallica's.
