.The city of El Jem, or Thysdrus, was built on old Punic settlements. The ampitheatre was built in the 3rd century and was the second most important Roman city in Northern Africa. The city was prosperous in the 2nd century. It was one of the largest Amphitheatres anywhere in the Roman world. It was the third amphitheatre in El Jem. The earlier two were smaller in capacity.
Carthage or Carthago is a city built on the East of Lake Tunis. Roman legend has it that it was first built in the 9th century BC. It was then a large city, very rich and a powerful state in the Mediterranean. Hannibal from Carthage invaded Rome and his vicory at Cannae could so easily have changed the whole of human history. But it didn't because the Romans never truly gave in or surrendered and finally won against Hannibal and proceeded to destroy the city in around 150BC.
Looking at these two sites of ruins one cannot but reflect on the savagery, the greed and the cruelty of all these peoples and wonder if we as a human race have really changed that much.
