What do the colored circles mean on the USArray visualization animations?
As seismic (earthquake) waves travel through the Earth, they cause the ground to move. The movement is recorded by seismograph stations. IRIS' visualizations show how seismic waves travel away from and earthquake & appear to sweep across about 400 USArray seismic stations. In this tutorial, USArray (www.usarray.org) was positioned in the central U.S.; it has since moved farther east.
We use the Bob Woodward's (IRIS) visualization from the 2008 China earthquake to show the process, then zoom in to the molecular level to emphasize the motion of the P, S, and surface waves.
