Congresswoman Heather Wilson recently presented the family of Esther Martinez with a signed and framed copy, known as a "Redline" due to the distinctive background used by the White House, of her legislation that honors the Tewa storyteller's remarkable life and helps preserve Native American languages.
"I know my Saya Esther would be very pleased and honored with the renewed focus on language preservation, and our family appreciates Congresswoman Wilson's efforts," said Matthew J. Martinez, grandson.
In December, President Bush signed into law the Wilson-sponsored Esther Martinez Native Languages Preservation Act. The new law helps prevent the loss of an important part of New Mexico's heritage, the Native American languages that are rapidly disappearing. Wilson continues to pursue funding and recently sent a letter to the House Appropriations Committee urging a $10 million investment in the preservation effort.
This is a very special thing!! Im glad they decided to this in schools, Native American students now days need to learn the language, its fading away and soon will be nothig if we dont do something to preserve it now!
