A homemade Leyden jar (original capacitor) discharges when it is charged to the maximum capacitance near a Van de Graaff.

  • he meant salt

  • What;s slat?

  • Water + slat = Best

    put that in your leyden

  • Fill the jar with powdered graphite to increase surface area that will increase potential.

  • hii im having troble with my layden jar , i cant get it to work, can anyone help me , take a look at my last video..thanxs in advance!!

  • You should make a nice big Leyden jar out of commercial size PVC pipe, use PVC caps for the ends. You wrap the foil around the outside of a smaller PVC pipe; spay glue inside of the bigger PVC pipe; carefully insert the smaller pipe with the foil into the bigger pipe, unrolling the foil into the now sticky inner walls of the larger PVC pipe. Put foil on the outside, too, and add electrodes to complete the project. WARNING!!! It's now very dangerous. Click my name to see what I'm up to.

  • ahh, you've gotta be careful when using a leyden jar and a van de graaf. The outcomes can be lethal. Anyhoo looks nifty nonetheless.

  • That was a Tesla coil, around Tesla and her was in a Faraday cage. He knew the electricity would take the route of least resistance. A capacitor can store more charge with a higher voltage, a VDG is extremely high voltage, to the extent that a VDG can charge one to stop your heart or at least cause your whole body to convulse. Defibrillators use capacitors.

  • pwris 16 my statement was more towards mikeandtiff because i wanted to tell him that the chances of being killed by a VDG are minimal if not impossible... go look at teslas pictures, the one of him sitting in a chair with electricity all around him.

being zapped by one at full power is not a pleasant experience but i doubt it would kill you. now... with capacitors.... im not sure that that capacitor could do anything to you.... but a larger one... yeah id stay away from a larger one lol

  • A Leyden jar could increase the amount of potential that could be stored as well as increasing the maximum charge that could be stored and thus the maximum current output possible within a specific amount of time. Combining VDG machines and capacitors allows dangerous things to happen.
