Saw/heard him with Soul Coughing (one band, 2.5 hours) and years later solo (with keyboardist)...both performances were stellar, both on my top musical moments list.
saw him in berlin, and a few days later in frankfurt - loved his music for years. he makes me happy all the time - as soul coughing did. great live performer.
Oh yes, I can see why you'd feel superior. I mean, if I had discovered him in a video full of half naked women, I'd be bursting with self-righteous, musical superiority as well.
This man is my soul partner. His music always manages to echo exactly what I am feeling. I adore him.
Saw him at the University of Utah in 2003 (I think) and he rocked the house. His songs are totally different from anybody in the world, and his comedy has you rolling on the floor. I love this guy! He's a survivor, too.
He's from Soul Coughing, from his solo career and his career in a band, enough folks have found him.. I'd prefer his popularity stay at its current level. Would have actually preferred you lot had never heard of him.. I'll let it slide.. Down on the River was introduced in one of the SG Vids, from there I developed an appreciation for this man.. not my favorite artists, but definitely an amazing one.
I think Mike is one of the greatest songwriters since Dylan, but I saw him live with his band, and ehhhhh, wasn't too impressed. Plus, I thought their song selection for a concert was lacking...just my opinion.

From what I've seen on Youtube (haven't seen him live YET), I think this guy is an original in songwriting and regret that he isn't recognized more.
