Protesters in the hallway outside of the Joint Finance Comitte Meeting on Thursday June 2nd. People challenge the police who block their entrance into the meeting, and the lawmaker who is participating in this meeting and vote which will make savage cuts to people's quality of life...while making no move to ask the wealthy to bear any sort of financial burden.
Inside the doors, the Joint Finance Committe is discussing and will vote on portions of the WI State budget which will make severe cuts to eduction funding, will increase vouchers which move money away from public education to private schools, will make cuts to recylcing programs, and will end in state tuition opportunities to the children of immigrants. For shame! People will no longer be passive in the face of these attacks! Many people inside were dragged out of the meeting by police for speaking outloud at the lawmakers.
This was a spontaneous act of direct action--one out of many during the day--which started simply as a vigil being held outside the capitol protesting the savage cuts to working people's quality of life in the proposed budget. 20 minutes into the vigil a speaker came to the front and proclaimed, "Now is the time for direct action" and hundreds of people marched inside the capitol to confront the Joint Finance Committee directly.
