Though "common knowledge" says otherwise, it turns out that Republicans and Democrats spend equally on social welfare programs. The main difference, says Christopher Faricy, Washington State University assistant professor of political science, is that Republican-backed spending tends to favor wealthier Americans, while spending programs pushed through by Democrats are more likely to benefit low-income Americans.
