I love this version of the song much better than the album version. This seems more honest and natural. A better beat for the sentiment of the lyrics. Awesome Van...as always.

I think the girl he remembers in this song is Gloria Gordon, his most loved cousine, dead in Chritsmas of 1961.

@stringsnbows43 As an admirer of Van's superb music I red a biography about this master some years ago. It said Van literally burst in tears while the recording session of this theme. It is dedicated to a girl who passed away with a cancer. A very close friend of him. The theme basically describes the last moments with her (little Gem) and Van feelings.
The anxious breathe, never wonder why, it is simply this way that must be. Little Gem is gone... (sorry for my bad english)

@PANTAOLAS You say your English is not so good yet you chose one of Van's masterpieces. There certainly isn't anything wrong with your taste in music. This is about my favorite song on one of my favorite CDs, TB Sheets. I love Van's version of the songs done on this CD. So raw. Just fabulous.

I'm not sure which version I like better. Astral Weeks version is so subtle, atmospheric and almost painfully beautiful, whereas this version is pure soul.
