On Labor Day Weekend 2011, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (in association with Norfolk Southern and several other companies) hosted the Tennessee Valley Railfest as part of their 50th anniversary. The return of steam to the NS mainline was the highlight of the weekend, as previewed at the beginning of this video, but NS and CSX provided quite a show as well.

S-Line Productions takes you to the action in part 1 of the Chattanooga Railfest Weekend series. Bridges & Tunnels features several trains on the Rathole between Emory Gap and Oakdale, including the scenic views of the Emory River Bridge, Harriman Junction, Camp Austin Road, and a unique up-close view of Tunnel 25. You will also witness a meet of two trains obtaining fresh crews in the final days of Oakdale's crew swap operations. All video was recorded on the morning of Saturday, September 3rd, 2011. Enjoy!

  • Very Nice meets

  • @NSCOALDRAG Thanks!

  • aI was on the train in the first shot! The man in the blue hanging out of the window in the first car is probably one of the coolest railroaders I've ever met. He's ridden in the cab of the Daylight at track speed and behind UP 844 at 90-95 mph (reached accidentally). Oakdale is now secured as one of my favorite railfanning locations. Thanks for capturing all of this, Evan!

  • @trainkid16 Cool! Did you happen to see me trackside? Thanks for the comment!

  • @csx6900 No! I was on the wrong side both times we passed. Sorry!

  • @trainkid16 No problem. I caught that trip several other times (as you'll see in part 3 or 4, depending on how it pans out), so maybe you'll have seen me then.

  • Terrific job! Keep up the great work.

  • @csx6900 Ah. Maybe!

  • @csx6900 I can also testify that the Emory Gap people have been very friendly, in fact I have visted for quite a lengthy time with someone from NS there, on the OCS day several of them gave me updates on the movements. Now I have heard several people say Oakdale isn't railfan friendly. I figure if you stay behind the gates at all times, don't act hyper and stay out of the street, you'll be okay. However, do not mess around in the neighborhood west of the tracks at EG.

  • *I was on the train
