A musically and lyrically brilliant composition and orchestration.

The story:

The young girl is a (reluctant) prostitute who hates her way of life. When the men leave her after sating themselves, she cries. To escape from harsh reality, she imagines music around her and being at the centre of the Sun, where no one can reach her to hurt her. The young boy pities her but can only look on helplessly. He likens the treatment of the girl to the black market trading of a beautiful instrument, a violin. He therefore seeks solace in the same way as she. Eventually, he summons the courage to talk to the girl, who responds with happiness that someone actually cares for her.

The lyrics:

Young girl in the market
Gives it to the men.
When the men leave,
Her eyes are red.
When her eyes are closed again,
She sees the dark market of a violin,
And she sings:
"They say the most horrible things,
But I hear violins.
When I close my eyes,
I am at the centre of the Sun,
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done."

Young boy in the market
Follows all the men.
When the men leave,
He's out of his head.
When his eyes are closed again,
He sees the dark market of a violin.
And he sings:
"They break the most beautiful things,
But I hear violins.
When I close my eyes, (version 1) I look into your eyes, (version 2)
I am at the centre of the Sun,
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done.
When I close my eyes,
I am at the centre of the Sun,
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done."

Young boy in the market
Sees the girl alone,
And asks her,
"Have you lost your way home?"
She sings:
"You say the most beautiful things,
Just like my violins.
I look into your eyes;
I am at the centre of the Sun,
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done.
When I close my eyes,
I am at the centre of the Sun,
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done,
'Cause I hear violins.
I hear violins..."
Etc.

Version 1 of 'Center of the Sun' has a very different musical arrangement.
