Sunset Over Jacksonville - The song for Jacksonville Oregon featured on the Oh Oregon, Songs of Oregon CD by singer/songwriter Christina Duane.
Lyrics:
The cry rang out and gold was discovered
In the rich Southern Oregon Hills
And a city rose that would yield more gold
Than was taken from old Sutter's mill
When I first beheld her in her autumn glory
My life lay before me, an unwritten story
We waded through leaves down her historic streets
While the courthouse was framed in magnificent trees.
My Spirit will rise
And My Soul will find rest
On a fritillaria hill
There among the graves where the pioneers lay
Where the sun sets over Jacksonville
The Woodlands are filled with the rarest of flowers
That dance on the dark forest floor
The trilliums bloom among wild roses
Where the giant Sequoia soars
Above on the mountain the music crys out
From the homestead that Peter Britt built
And his legend lives on through art, wine and song
And his ghost roams his gardens still
My spirit will rise and my soul will find rest
On a fritillaria hill
There among the graves Where the pioneers lay
And the sun sets over Jacksonville
Peter planted a vineyard there in the 1870's
Bringing seeds from around the world, he planted exotic trees
And he photographed the town folk, the Chinese mining Gold
The loggers felling trees, their hard fought stories told
Beheld the deep blue waters, in the mirror of the sky
Showed the world it's wonder, with his photographic eye
And it's here where his artist spirit lingers
Where his faint echoing fiddle plays
That I will spend the autumn and the winter of my days
My spirit will rise and my soul will find rest
On a fritillaria hill
There among the graves where the pioneers lay
And the sunsets over Jacksonville.
