  • Jean Marsh was magnificent leaving the house in the original series and she's just as splendid returning six years later.

  • Such beautiful music, acting and cinematography

  • I was expecting Rose to say "I'm home," at the end, but even without it, this was awesome.

  • i remember watching this clip having never seen the 70's version of the show, so it had no significance to me.

I then looked on youtube to check out the 70's series just to see what it was all about, thinking id only watch 5mins, i assumed it would be stuffy and dull but i was so surprised, i love it.

I watched all the series in one go, i cant get enough of it.

And now seeing rose back, this clip suddenly has meaning.

    : )

  • @guyboocock I daresay they would've used the original sets, but they've probably been broken up years ago.

  • I enjoyed the new series, but after just finishing watching the magnificent original series, I am appalled that the Beeb didn't make more of an effort to make 165 look the same internally. The house has been empty for 6 years, yet in that time, the entrance hall floor has changed, the servants door has changed, the lamp stands on the staircase or a different shape, the balustrade has changed. And then externally. Don't get me started!

  • I should like to think many the spirit of character and actor was looking down with a smile at Rose and Jean.

  • jean marsh doesn't need to say anything in this scene, and yet she brings out so much emotion in this scene. that's what shows a good actor

  • @PeerlessKid Agreed - it brought a tear to my eye, especially the orchestral swell and modulation when she has her hand on the stair rail - pure opera! I can see I'm going to have to buy this, having payed scant attention when it was aired. I have recently revisited ALL the original series and am now addicted!

  • I've learnt my lesson long ago with PBS or Masterpiece Theatre: never watch the UK dramas on Masterpiece Theatre or PBS as they cut so much out! Try and watch it online or wait for the DVD if you want to see it in its entirety. x

  • @mickeyh1961 Thank you, they would never have even considered another series if most of the original cast were still alive. As I said I may not have been around at the time, but the original series is something that cannot be improved upon. And as you say leave the past there where it belongs, in the past.

  • @DaveyC95 Well said my sentiments EXACTLY leave the memory of this great series alone, the past is gone & can never be replaced, let us just enjoy the genius & memory that was Upstairs Downstairs a true masterpiece, no fakes or replicas.
