When I first bought my Western Digital Passport drive I had all intentions of putting hundreds of movies on it and plugging it into my USB enabled DVD player that's hooked up to my TV. Unfortunately it didn't work :( The drive draws power through the USB cable, and the LG DVD player I have, doesn't supply enough. I thought that if I bought an external case with it's own power adapter, took the drive out of the Passport and put it in there, it might work. Nope didn't work either, it was still drawing power from the DVD player. Last night my brother said "All you need to do is find the pin in the USB cable that has power and disconnect it." Eureka!

As always you do this at your own risk and I will not be responsible for any damages to your drive, dvd player, or computer. Everything worked fine for me though.

This would also work with a Computer that doesn't have enough power to run a Passport.

  • @cegoins25 Parts around my house were 0 dollars and I live where everything I get has to be ordered so this was no wait time either. :)

  • Hey. does it mater how many amps?? im using a samsung phone charger with 5v and 0.7 amps. when i plug it in i can here the disk speeding up and then makes like a clicking sound and slows down fast and then speeds up again and repeats..

  • @markPIVEN

That's what my passport would do before I made the cord. Sounds like it's not getting enough power, double check that you cut the the right wires.

  • What a GREAT idea...well done....

  • Yeah it's called a USB Y-Cord. Make sure it's 2 USB to mini USB. The mini usb goes into the hard drive, and the normal usbs go into the dvd usb port and into a usb AC charger which of course goes into the wall. If it doesn't work first go, try switching the normal USBs around. If you just type 'USB Y Cord' into ebay, it should come up with tons of them. Only cost a couple of bucks too :) Good luck!

  • @jasbuk what is this cord called that u bought from ebay , id like one

  • is there a cord like this that ur making .that i can buy off ebay??

  • I bought a cord like this one off Ebay which I think is essentially the same thing. It's got one usb end which goes out to another usb and a mini usb. Just waiting on it to come from Hong Kong. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, rlly sound like it has not enough Amps.

  • Markpiven

Of COURSE it matters what amps . Nearly all those adapters give out 5v DC, the only diff is the amperage. You need more amps, check out the specs of the drive. SOme shops (maplin) sell a dc adapter with mutiple outputs at varying amperages to suit many devices. This would suit
