Joseph Haydn composed the then Austrian, now German national anthem in 1797, using the melody later in his String quartet op. 76/3. These piano variations are basically a transcription of those earlier variations with some minor adjustments.

Andreas Staier plays on a pianoforte built after an original instrument from 1792.
