NXP Semiconductors together with Kestrel will codevelop a solution to the problem of DVD theft throughout the supply chain. Combining NXP's RFID chip technology with Kestrel's RFA (radio frequency activation) it will be possible to disable DVDs at the point of manufacture and enable them at the point of sale. This will render the DVDs worthless along the supply chain to eliminate the incentive for theft. Video media will be the first application of this RFID/RFA solution. However, the solution is applicable to all consumer electronics products. Advantages of the solution include expanding video media and consumer electronics distribution opportunities, and eliminating expensive security devices, restrictive packaging, and display cages. It also makes it possible to use more environmentally friendly packaging in lieu of plastics. The RFID/RFA solution is designed so that it has a minimal impact on existing Point-of-Sales (POS) systems, and maximum benefit to retailers. The radio frequency chips are embedded in the consumer product and then activated by an RFA-enhanced RFID reader at the POS. The Kestrel network authenticates the information that it receives when the chip is scanned. If all is in order, an enabling code is sent to the chip to activate the product. NXP and Kestrel plan to continue developing new RFID/RFA enabled products through a series of pilot programs including buying and activating products on your cell phone.
RFID is the mark of the beast.
Plus streaming DVD's rules, don't get rid of it you bastards.
