February 18, 2008: Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther
LSB #607

From depths of woe I cry to Thee, in trial and tribulation; bend down Thy gracious ear to me, Lord, hear my supplication. If thou rememberest every sin, who then could heaven ever win or stand before Thy presence?

Thy love and grace alone avail to blot out my transgression; the best and holiest deeds must fail to break sin's dread oppression. Before Thee none can boasting stand, but all must fear Thy strict demand and live alone by mercy.

Therefore my hope is in the Lord and not in my own merit; it rests upon His faithful Word to them of contrite spirit that He is merciful and just; this is my comfort and my trust. His help I wait with patience.

And though it tarry through the night and till the morning waken, my heart shall never doubt His might nor count itself forsaken. O Israel, trust in God your Lord. Born of the Spirit and the Word, now wait for His appearing.

Though great our sins, yet greater still is God's abundant favor; His hand of mercy never will abandon us, nor waver. Our shepherd good and true is He, who will at last His Irael free from all their sin and sorrow.

  • @tommerrigan1956 Why is Martin Luther a heretic? What teachings of his contradicted the Words of the holy apostles and prophets?

  • @tommerrigan1956 The Catholic church was the chief of the Heretics in the Middle ages. Even the Orthodox church agrees with this.

  • I love this Hymn very much. It is the first time that even englisch sounds in German Language. God bless you. The Holy Spirit give ayou a strenghth for everlasting to sing this Hymn. Thank you. Jesus died for my sin on the cross. he loved me befor i love him. God the Vater, I praise your Holy Name. Halleluja.

  • i love the hymn, written by a heretic, an apostate, and an excommunicant.

  • What a powerful hymn. Who among us has not be in depths of woe? O Father, hear me calling!

  • and live alone - by mercy - by MERCY

  • First seats are usually empty in our lutheran churches too. (Finland) :-) I also like this in english, sounds the same.

  • Depends how you use the term "Reformed" ;)

  • It's one of the earliest Luther hymns. At our church we generally sing it on Ash Wednesday.

A guitar rendition would probably sound very much like what it originally sounded like when Luther was writing it. Luther's instrument was the lute.
