The GPS is built in, the GPS antenna adapter mounts on the top of the radio, or the external microphone.

I played around with one at Ham Radio Outlet in Atlanta. I was disappointed that Yaesu abandoned the 100% magnesium body construction of the VX-7r. Some of the VX-8r body is plastic. Nice radio, though.
GPS is indeed through an optional attachment to the speaker mic.

It is newest unit of VX product line which is rugged, and fully water proof. (rated 30 minutes in 1m underwater.) GPS unit can be attached to microphone or to the unit.

what good is a gps on this thing? the screen is a small mono color display.
if it was like the garmin it may have some use.
digital capabilities?
USB port?
The bluetooth is nice, if it works.

It is not really aiming to be fully functional navigation device, but rather, it will be a device for exchanging position data, etc.
You should be able to tell relative position of other people in APRS network, though.

compare to the 7R.. does the batt last any long? most of the 7R we has drain alot of batt. can last even half a day while on tracking.

That'd be interesting to find out. I think ti'll be purely depending on how often it transmit the posit data, etc.
