  • My grandmother was at the actual concert. She said part of the audience was made up of people who had year round tickets to every show at Carnegie Hall regardless of who was playing. They were all pretty much classical music fans who hated this new music called Swing. The rest of the audience were teenagers and college age kids who were fans of Benny. She said when they played Sing Sing Sing the entire theater erupted and kids jumped into the aisles and started dancing. It was pandemonium.

  • I had to stand up and clap after it finished it was so great :)

  • @gunperry My grandmother is long passed. Carnegie Hall didn't cater to kids into pop music, so she wouldn't have frequented the place much. Her nights out were spent at the legendary Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. The "lindy-hop" was the dance craze and my mother told me she was great at it.

When the George Washington Bridge was built in the 1930's, she was ecstatic because now she could go over to New Jersey see her favorite singer. He was a waiter at a restaurant named Frank Sinatra.

  • @tomthefunky Ah, you are lucky! Is she still alive? I love classical music and pre WWII music (Swing, Charleston etc.) and Ragtime. They hated Swing, but it was really good music, not the crap that they sell today. Rap and all of the other "music" that is popular now really sucks. Did your grandmother see a magician in Carnegie Hall called Dai Vernon?

  • i absolutely fell in love with song when i first played it on my trumpet!!..im only 14 and this is 1 of my most favorite songs to play!

  • Just listening to the sound its so rich & smooth

  • Also, many other parts include the clarinet sound while the protagonist (The guy staring as Goodman) does nothing as if the sound is coming from the void. The movie should have been more careful in actual reproduction of a masterpiece concert like this one.

  • 1:09~1:18 is obviously a clarinet sound and the guy stands idle. A litle fly in the ointment in this movie.

  • great band, I love listen and dance this music........clap clap clap..........

  • This was a great performance by Steve Allen as Benny Goodman. That is the real Gene Krupa one of the greatest drummers of all time, and Harry James on trumpet. James was married to the glamorous Betty Grable the pinup girl of world war II.
