The first ever cartoon in CinemaScope. In this short subject (which mostly represents a departure from Disney's traditional approach to animation), a stuffy owl teacher lectures his feathered flock on the origins of Western musical instruments. Starting with cavepeople, whose crude implements could only "toot, whistle, plunk and boom," the owl explains how these beginnings led to the development of the four basic types of Western musical instruments: brass, woodwinds, strings, and percussion.

  • I LOVE this style of Disney animtation!

  • 7:06-7:52 are my favorite part because every time somebody plays a stringed instrument whether plucking it or playing it with a bow, the strings break.

  • I remember seeing this in school, in the 1970s, on a film projector. More than once, actually. It seemed longer then, oddly. What a classic!

  • @kjemradio "Nyuf nyez nyif nveh, freddy is the devil! Nyuf nyez nyif nveh, freddy is the devil!" Did ya get that reference? HINT: It was a Touchstone release from the 80s starring Robin Williams.

  • @tchiriga263 Considering that Walt Disney invented stereo sound, yeah.

  • When I was in 4th grade we watched this on a projector. It was really fun when our teacher ran the film backwards. The projector could even play the music backwards. Ahhh those were the days. BTW trying listening to this with a headset. With all the left and right panning it is really weird. Why Disney ever got away from these classics is beyond me.

  • Hey, it's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at 1:58 !

  • Une merveille !
