Do you always practice all keys through the cicle of fourths? Do you find that easier to do than chromatically ascending or descending the melody?

Doing it by way of the cycle of fourths is great. It expands your inner ear's ability to hear more possibilities. Personally I also find that if you work these exercises out chromatically and in whole steps in addition to fourths not only does your inner ear's hearing expands the dexterity in your fingering technique improves. Just remember be patient. It's a lot of information and technique that you'll be taking in and trying to make your own.

@caseymusic Yes, always mix the cycle motion - I recommend using Mick Goodrick's method - I use cycle 4 for my video lessons for simpification...

@MattOttoJazz I'm not totally sure what the Mick Goodrick's method is. Is it the cycle of 4ths?

@caseymusic Mick uses 7 cycle motions = ascending by step (cycle 2), descending by step (cycle 7), ascending by 3rds (cycle 3), descending by 3rds (cycle 6), ascending by 4ths (cycle 4), descending by 4ths (cycle 5)... his books are enlightening..

Hi 1979saxman, thanks for the comment. To answer your question...No, I don't always practice around the circle of fourths. Honestly, I mostly just pick a tune and improvise over the form for a long time. For lessons I think the cycle motion is organized an thorough. I do enjoy ascending and descending by half step or minor or major thirds as well. I'm mainly trying to keep it simple and clear for the videos.
