In interview Doris referred to it as Orient Metal. Not black metal because that is usually associated with Satanism, which these guys are not. Their songs are about Mythology and other things, such as Freedom and Sacrifice

There's a genre called "depressive suicidal black metal" but Chthonic clearly don't fall into this category. DSBM sounds really really different from what Chthonic's playing and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.
