Drumnet Part 1

Drumnet's mission "is to create a commercially sustainable financial and information services network in Africa." The project brings together : - smallholder farmers through collaboration with AgriTrade Kenya - combined with agricultural input suppliers certified by Agmark - with financial support supplied by Equity, Kenya's largest rural bank - all guaranteed by a wholesale buyer, the region's biggest vegetable oil processors, Bidco. Drumnet has developed a unique platform through ICTs and mobile telephony that creates a cohesive chain from the field to the shops, in which all stakeholders get a fair and transparent deal.

Flooded Cellar has followed the development of sunflower production in Kenya through Drumnet and Pride Africa's new market chain. Drumnet sources the farmers and persuades them to change their crop to sunflower, by providing them with a guaranteed buyer in Bidco. Drumnet also ensures the quality of seeds provided by collaborating with an internationally recognised input supplier, Agmark. All finance is coordinated via SMS with Kenya's largest rural bank, Equity. The project has been made possible by support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
