5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer.

Author Michael Murray, N.D., a leading naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, delves very deeply to explain the hows and whys of depression at the neurotransmitter level, and the illustrations of presynaptic membranes may be a bit much for the lay reader. There are also several sections with intimidating titles along the lines of "Enhancing 5-HTP with Catecholamine Precursors." But the book's comprehensiveness makes up for its occasional denseness. Murray includes enlightening sections on nutrition for peak serotonin synthesis, other complementary herbal supplements, and many online and physical sources for obtaining 5-HTP. --Erica Jorgensen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal
Murray (Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements, Prima, 1996) believes that the symptoms of depression, obesity, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity, premenstrual syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia can be alleviated by taking the amino acid 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan). The body converts 5-HTP into serotonin, a neurotransmitter vital for brain function, and Murray argues that increased serotonin levels mitigate much of the discomfort associated with the conditions cited above. He devotes major chapters to depression, weight loss, insomnia, and headache, with each following the same format: exploration of the condition and orthodox treatment, review of studies using 5-HTP, and recommendations for therapeutic doses. Personal stories illustrate how patients have benefited from 5-HTP. It is apparent from warnings given throughout the book, however, that use of this natural supplement is not without danger, especially if taken with certain prescription medicines. • you're kidding me right... depression was not my choice

  • @fionacb95 For SOME people depression is a choice. Not all. If it's a choice, it's the "poor me syndrome." There are multiple causes of depression. Not just one.

  • i don't mean to insult your intelligence but big pharma is run by boards of directors not moms or doctors. they don't care about you. they care about your money

  • DO NOT INSULT ME. You state "Depression is a choice", then the next slide states "Depression is the result of a CHEMICAL IMBALANCE in the brain"

And this is my choice how ?????

The more i watched this video and the slides presented, the more I came to the conclusion it's a load of garbage...

and on what do i base this assessment ? well the fact that i've been diagnosed with major depression to start with.

  • Believe me, I have no desire to be depressed, it just happens. I try not to let it happen, but it still does. It is NOT a choice.

  • This video got some good and bad stuff!

But why on earth do they give out antidepressiv medicine to a depressive sucide bloke with even more side effect as suicidal thoughts.

We didn't choose depression. The world, made us depressiv.

If that is a Jew at 2:38 you better screw you self!

As he wouldn't be depressed in Treblinka or auschwitz

  • Yeah it was so very spiritual when I was molested by relatives growing up and beaten senseless everyday by my parents . God was very good to me and I can only blame myself for being stuck in a traumatic replay of my past everyfuckingday. I love to struggle with PTSD and losing friends and family along the way.

A choice you say? Spit me in the face some more you mindless piece of shit.

  • what the heck is spirituality?

  • I would just like to point out that l-tryptophan is the reason everyone feels sleepy after their thanksgiving meal. Turkey has a high amount of l-tryptophan in it. l-tryptophan is also a key ingredient in sleep aids. so taking l-tryptophan as a medication for depression could potentially mess you up. I would really talk to a doctor before you up your l-tryptophan intake.

  • @SoloQ It think that could be classified under the "social" cause or a class of its own?
