Most consumer cameras don't have ports for external mics.
Some of the canon ZR series do and I highly recommend them.

@axel10tro you can use a field recording device like the zoom h4 to capture the audio and then edit after the footage is captured.

Yes i have a question, what if your using something other then a camcorder, Like i plan on using my new iPhone, though i want to get some high quality audio, what can i use to take around with me to record the audio separately?

One unique product that could be right up your alley is the OWLE bubo. It allows you to use an external mic, plus much more. If you go to our website and search "The OWLE bubo: What a Hoot!", you'll find a detailed review. Another option is to use an external recorder. You'll have to sync it up later in your editor, which can be a hassle, but with the right equipment this will give you the very best sound.
