From the second album of Rose Royce : In Full Bloom released in 1978. Although it was not a big hit, the song got renewed exposure when it was featured in the 2001 John Singleton film, Baby Boy. Baby Boy is a 2001 American urban drama film written, produced, and directed by John Singleton. It has been considered a sequel of sorts to Singleton's earlier, more famous work, Boyz N The Hood.

i use to say this was my friend jo in heaven's song , yet therere's a guy named Ghost Rider whose been a good friend and writes letters like something out of the movie :'NoteBook " and even tho he's just a great friend when he writes he doesn't know how much his advice or just sayin hi makes a cloudy sky with NO sign of light turn into an endless night of Faith & greatfulness to god for finding him on computer across the hugest ocean between us

@stevepetts It wasn't a film, it was a mini-series that came out in 2000 on NBC, if that's what you're referring to. I was born in 1989, so I wouldn't know anything about its placement on the charts when it was originally released but I found about this song (as I'm sure others did as well) because of that mini-series. As long as it gets exposure, I don't see why it matters who found out about it first.
