Steadicam Pilot Demo

Andy Nicholls demonstrates the Steadicam Pilot rig with a Sony Z7 camera on Wang Cheng's short film Missing. The Steadicam pilot rig is great for small DSLR cameras like the Canon 5d, 7d, 550d, along with HD cameras like the Sony Z1, Z5, Panasonic, HMC-151, HPX-171 Canon XF-305, up to EX1, EX3.

Is it possible to use it without the arm peace?

@stevenerer I wouldn't like to try it, not with my camera. You wouldn't be able to hold most cameras at arms length for any time without wobbling. That said, Cameragrip/Hague do make something like that, a sled with no arm, probably really aimed at domestic camcorders or small DSLRs maybe.

@Burritoast No, many European Steadicam operators work in Goofy mode, arm on the left, it is the way we are taught, Americans tend to work with the arm on the right. A good operator should be able to work either side as the shot requires, i.e. tight up against a wall, I'm not great on the right side, changing sides does require practice. What I would say is that Goofy seems the perfectly logical side to work for me, it means you can see and access all the controls on the camera easily.

@Tomheidable True as the handheld images are off of my own HD camera, the actual footage, shot on a Z7, was supplied to me later on DVD after editing and encoding etc.

As soon as you see a real steadycam shot the homemade and ebay stuff suddenly looks bad in comparison. DIY ones always have a floating out of control look to them, and they soften walking rather than eliminate it. But I can't afford one of these.

i always feel sorry for camera operators... they almost do every physical action the actor does, but holding an extra big fat ass camera. RESPECT TO CAMERAMEN.

I´m right handed and because of that I found to frame properly with the left hand a nightmare...so I put the arm on the left...side.
