A bit of a departure from the usual Amstrad reviews and longplays... I picked up this USB joystick of the legendary 80's Competition Pro in Maplins the other day for less than £20 ... so lets open up the box, see what's inside and if it all works!

OK .... sorry about the shaky cam and crap camera work! I will improve in future reviews :)

  • Shame on you ! (always wanted to say that :D) The Amstrad gods are looking those C64 games on your PC and shaking their head..

Weird not to see '& Longplay ' in the name of the video, but I'm sure you played for long after the review ! ;·)

Seems a really nice joystick !

  • @Metr81 I know dude :( I'm so sorry.

    :P

(ps don't worry, another Amstrad longplay vid is now up to compensate!)

  • nice review, shame it wasnt one of those many-games-in-one plug into the tv consoles as i quite like those quirky systems

  • @kmment From researching after the video, it looks like there is the same Competition Pro joystick but as you describe (TV plug-in system) - using the same C64 games available!

  • Nice pickup. Ive noticed that at least online there have been a re-release of both the genuine old style Competition Pro (with plug for the original hardware) and a usb version.

The one you go there must be yet another batch as the other one was "see thru" casings.

Pretty nice of them to rerelease the old joystick as it just makes us old retro gamers happy and there cant be much money in it really.

  • @CholoCPC Yep very nice of them to do so, I just wonder if the original Competition Pro's were as stiff and awkward as this version.

  • i paid £7.00 for this

  • has anyone found a good joystick for the ccs64 emulator (a commodore 64 emulator). I thought something would be easy to track down but I can't find anything I'd buy as yet...sgtill using keys...

  • @Xyphoe I read in a review that they have problem with unit not detecting movements from down to down-left (or down-right) position. E.g. when you use down to crouch, and from that position you move down-left or down-right to move while prone.

Can you test if that happens to your unit? (Try doing that in Rick Dangerous)

p.s. I hated the original b/c of no suction cups and it was a bit sreachy/stiff (I preferred joysticks with more movement), but hey, it's only USB classic joystick available...

  • You can find the controllers under "devices and printers".

  • @Xyphoe Have a look at this video:

    youtube.com/watch?v=t_fHGrIhVCg

Maybe it will help you about these USB adapters.

  • @markvergeer Cheers for that, it was the first time loading up Vice and wasn't going to faff about here.

  • @alex76gr It's certainly not the easiest joystick to use :( I may go back to the joypad I have or using keyboard. I have found online a connector that converts old joystick connectors to USB ... but dunno how good it is.
