This film examines the work of Bronislaw Malinowski, often revered as the founding father of modern anthropology.

Malinowski famously "went native", intending to live among the mysterious tribes of the Trobriand Islands in the Pacific Ocean for 12 months.

However, the outbreak of the First World War forced him to stay for four years and the resulting work he produced was seen as pioneering.

Some 25 years after his death, his newly-published diaries revealed that he actually reviled the islanders and dismissed them as backward savages.

The revelation rocked the reputation of both Malinowski and anthropology itself.

This film returns to the islands to explore Malinowski's story and its legacy.

  • he was a man of his times. so he said nigger, big deal. you can bet the Trobrians had a few names for him too!!>>>>>Trobrian talking to his buddy:"hey! its that goofy white belly again! how longs that bean pole gonna be here??"

  • You know what? Many American anthropologists criticized Malinowski only because of his journal. My American professor openly denied the achievement of Malinowski only because of his dairy. She simply called Malinowski as a racist and a sexist, and concluded that his work as a myth and has no value (It reminds me Bill Clinton's scandal, which is completely ridiculous)

  • I appreciate what that woman is trying to do, by examining the cultures that we wouldn't normally think to examine (our own), but she's still ridiculously annoying. I'm sure reading her work would be fascinating, but I don't want to hear her voice ever again.

  • woman is wasting that anthro degree

  • how he feels day to day didnt turn out to be his over all feelings! thats all

  • @inferno0020 Well, your teacher is very radical to judge Malinowski. He was the most anti-racist scientist of all time, whicxh is demonstrated by his work. In Spanish, my first language, the 'N' word is very common, however I don't use it anymore because I have been enculturized in the Anglo-American culture. However, when I heard spanish speaker pronouncing that word I don't find any kind of racism on their tone.

  • @EduKass learn English my friend

  • What an insight this woman has provided. Astounding. Not.

  • Could they find no one more interesting to interview than this blonde tart?

  • Considering that Milanowski came of from an era that the 'Nig' word was common - he did really well, and anyway, the Papuans would have had lots of words for him! They must've been sick of his pasty skin. As far as the work at hand - he did awesome, because if he didn't, all these modern day anthropologists would still be ignorant and racist for another 50 years. Being a Pacific Islander myself, I say good on him for enlightening everyone.

  • ¿Tendran la versión subtitulada al español?

Les estaría agradecido, soy estudiante de Antropología de la Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal, Lima - Perú.

  • Bloody What? Ni what?

    man what the fuck?
