Dr. Sa. Shi. Marulaiah hails from Sasalu in Tumkur District. He obtained his B.A. (Honors) and M.A. from Mysore University and Ph.D. from Karnataka University . He has served in the capacity of Kannada Lecturer, Reader, Professor and then as Principal for over three decades in various colleges in Karnataka. He has also served as the Chief Editor for the Vishwa Kosha, in the Directorate of Public Instructions and as a member of the Language Commission in Bangalore .
He has authored more than 78 books. He has worked on different genres of literature, namely Poetry, Stories, Novel, Literary Criticism, Essays, Biography, Philosophy, Research, etc: "keMgana kallu", "bhaasana makkaLu", "bhaarata ratna", "sItA vanavaasa saMgraha", "svapnavaasavadatta" , "nelada sogaDu", "vachana vaibhava", "maLLigoMdu oLLemAtu", "kannaDa bhASheya charitre" and "maasti kaavya: oMdu samIkShe"-- to name a few. He has the unique distinction of writing 50 operas in Kannada.
He has served as the Secretary and the President of Kannada Sahitya Parishat. He has presided in many goShThis in various Kannada Sahitya Sammelanas. He has been the recipient of many honors and awards: Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, Karanataka Sahitya Academy Award are some of the prestigious awards he has been conferred with.
