Cecile Chaminade was in love with a flautist, but he was not in love with her. To her great despair, he became engaged to be married... to another woman. On the day of his wedding, Cecile brought him the score of the 'Concertino', the outpouring of her feelings in a beautiful piece for flute. Unfortunately, he wasn't moved, and he married the other woman.

This is that Concertino by Chaminade as performed by the San Diego Youth Symphony's Symphonic Wind Ensemble (sdys.org). Conducted by R. Theodore Bietz, concerto performed by USMC Staff Sergeant Joey A Payton. Flute playing at its finest.

  • Where did you find the information about Chaminade being in love with a flautist? I've researched Chaminade in depth and the only "love interest" i have found was when she married Louis-Mathieu Carbonel and even then all sources confirm that it was a marriage of convenience rather than love and Chaminade herself stated that her only love in life was to be music.

If what you say is true then I would really appreciate knowing your source so I can draw from the source for my research. Thanks!

  • I'm not sure. It might have been SSG Payton giving the background of the piece during a rehearsal, or something I found online.

  • It isn´t a orchestral piece.

Originally it´s written for flute and piano.

  • This is correct.

  • I'm so jealous. lol SSgt Garza did this with the First Marine Division Band in 2010 and Sgt Lau did it with the Miramar Band. SSgt Payton set the standard for how this is to be played by Marine Musicians. My name is Corporal Balcorta by the way. =) I'm currently in the First Marine Division Band. I hope to perform this to your caliber one day.

  • @fuvo13 originally written for flute and orchestra. Flute and piano is an arrangement.

  • @tomypaes It's a gorgeous piece but I've played it way too many times. I'm just tired of it, lol.

  • @bubbleskami how so?

  • oh men....he´´s got such a clear tone

  • It may just be just a fictional story to go along with the piece but I too was told this when I first learned this piece by my instructor.
