Sandakan8 - Kinuyo Tanaka

Sandaken 8 is the name of a brothel in se asia, and this is the story told in flashbacks by an old "karayukisan" to a writer, about her being sold into the brothel as a teenager to pay family debts. Apprehensive and cautious at first, Yamakawa Osaki(Kinuyo Tanaka) eventually becomes very attached to the writer.

The culmination of her life of grief comes to this point just after being rebuffed by EVEN the other "karayukisan" for having divulged her "terrible" past to the writer. The writer is packing to return to japan, when Osaki asks for a towel to remember her by,,,,,a lifetime of misery and sadness brings Osaki to a gut wrenching wail.

The sadness of this story is overwhelming.

so it made me so big shocking.

Thank you for posting. I am so glad I found this clip. I read the book after searching for 15 yrs and finally they translated in English. I read about this movie in Indonesian newspaperin the 70s but could not watch the movie. After 30 yrs I finally found it. Thank you for posting. My respect to the writer and Osaki-san. She has sacrificed for Japan and it's people. May her soul rest in peace and may her next life be a woman of leisure..!
