Childhood is both a time of joy and laughter, and a journey of learning and maturing. Scenes of childhood are depicted by the lively Allegro section, while the following lyrical Lento section represents the journey of growth. The Allegro section is recapitulated, and the piece ends with a comical coda.

A hybrid of pentatonic and chromatic scales is employed, giving the piece a Chinese character but in a fresh new style.

This video shows the performance on 14 Dec 2008 by the combined string ensembles of Hwa Chong Institution and Nanyang Girls High School at the Esplanade Recital Studio.

WANG Chenwei originally composed this piece at age 16 for the Ruan (chinese lute) ensemble and later re-arranged it for the western string ensemble. The ruan ensemble version was premiered on 17 Sep 2005, and can be watched at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjOR5NOVdpY
