Well, I agree on some parts on your review. However, the part where you mention how David respects Michael greatly, and that he doesn't know it.
Well, in one episode where Jan was suing Michael. Michael testified against Jan, saving the company of losing millions of dollars. That just shows you, how acknowledgable Michael is to his boss and his company.
To stay on topic, the episode wasn't bad. It was awkward, down-to earth, no-nonsense really brought reality to the Office.

I think Michael was under a lot of stress about getting a new boss, and that motivated his behavior.

Yeah I mean Michael getting a new boss to him is threatening and I think he wanted to badly to make himself look good that he made himself look awful and because he was called out on it and Charles buying everyone lunch etc, that made him go from stressed about Charles' presence to being upset and desperate to regain his status in the office.
