Just had one today without sedation, it doesn't really hurt.
The worst thing of it all is the vomit reflex which is hard to control, bst thing to do is take deeeep breaths and think about something else, besides that you do feel there's an object in your throat and when it's in your stomach it feels very uncomfortable rather than painful.
I wasn't sedated by option and it only lasted around 5 minutes and I would only do it sedated if I had another one in a few weeks and would last 10 mins.
