After 2 years of transition, injuries, and very average play, Brett Favre returned to MVP form in 2001 under second year head coach Mike Sherman. Favre's 32 touchdown passes was the 5th highest single season total of his career. The Packers also find their playoff form again, returning to the postseason for the first time since 1998.
Favre's signature performances included a 3 touchdown pass performance on Monday Night Football against the Redskins in the NFL's return week after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a 137.4 passing rating in a win over a the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, two wins over young Brian Urlacher and the 13-3 Chicago Bears, a 14 point 2nd half comeback on Monday Night Football in Jacksonville (culminating in Favre's 1st rushing touchdown since 1998), and an efficient 112.6 passer rating performance against the 12-4 49ers in the Packers' first playoff win since the 1997 NFC Championship Game.
As high as the highs of the 2001 season were, there were many frustrating lows. The Packers would get blown out 35-13 by an awful Vikings team in the Metrodome, and follow up each Bears win with embarassing losses to give control of the division back to Chicago. The first Bears win was followed up by a 23-20 home loss to the Chris Chandler lead 4-4 Atlanta Falcons. The second Bears win was followed up by 26-20 loss at the 5-7 Titans, highlighted by a 142 yard rushing performance by Skip Hicks, a runner with only 903 career rushing yards coming in.
These losses forced Favre and the Packers to enter the playoffs as a wildcard, sending them to play the 14-2 St Louis Rams in the second round. Brett Favre and the offense accounted for 17 Packer points, and 21 Ram points. Statistically, the Packers controlled the game, but Favre, showing glimpses of his reckless gunslinger future, threw 6 interceptions, 3 of which the Rams returned for touchdowns. This performance began to raise questions about Favre's ability to lead the Packers back to the Super Bowl; questions that would only gain more credence in coming years.

@gore21best why is it blind? when bad circumstances like 9/11 happen, we all have to have one common love, the love of our country, not our politicians

I was at the atlanta game. Only game they lost that year at home. I think Chris freaking chandler threw for 400+. Pretty solid day for the packer defense. Go figure!
