In Japan, it's not polite to leave your shoes whichever way you took them off at the door. You must take off your shoes and place the toe of the shoe facing to the door so that the hostess doesn't have to clean it up and organize it. Order is very important in a Japanese house! As a US Navy Brat, I loved growing up in Japan. I loved that it was made so easy to put your shoes in the cabinets near the door. It seemed so much cleaner than wearing shoes in the house.
