Fascinating account of the development of American folk music through the 20th century. The first part centre on the contributions of Leadbelly and Alan Lomax.
@Marantzguy I agree too! I found power of song here on youtube and it was nice, informed me some about all of pete seeger's life, but this was really much better and more informative, and really even had better music clips included.
From Brazil here. I love folk because it brings us this feeling of simplicity. This felling that tells us to be happy enjoying simple things. I'm sad about people nowadays, everybody wants to show off power, money and physical beauty ¬¬. Lets celebrate a simple life lol.
Some years ago, I came across a pile of very nice, mostly unplayed lps of American folk material issued by the Library of Congress. Precious items and in mint condition. I also once found a genuine acetate 33 1/3 lp out at a local flea market.. Included on one side was material by Leadbelly (intended for a memorial album, apparently) and inside the plain jacket were original typewritten, single-spaced notes authored by Allen Lomax himself. I got the Smithsonian to authenticate this.
I cannot believe that there are few if no comments on this incredible documentary effort. Leave it to the Brits to do such a superb job of researching American folk music.
This goes so much further than anything I have ever viewed previously and kind of makes the PBS series American Masters pale in comparison.
amazing. thx!
