Tremendous stuff. This was my first time watching Salonen. I had played the finale in an orchestra way back in 1984 and this has remained one of my favorite symphonic pieces since then. The tempo was, I thought, just right. Wonderful seeing a conductor so moved by the music. That was how I felt playing in the horn section--just overwhelmed by the music.
Good performance... Though I must say I prefer Karajan's much slower interpretation... I believe he once said he's the only one who really understands Sibelius' music. Maybe arrogant, but I think it's true to some extent.
Yeah, a Finnish conductor conducting a Finnish composer's symphony! :P It's like having a Russian pianist play Rachmaninoff music, you're in for a real treat. I'm gonna try to get this piece on iTunes, the live performance in the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted of course, by Salonen. :)
