This is the ATC tapes of U.S Airways Flight 1549 just before they landed on the Hudson.

On January 15, 2009, Sullenberger was pilot in command of an Airbus A320 from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. The flight was designated as US Airways Flight 1549 as well as United Airlines Flight 1919.However, after taking off, Sullenberger reported to air traffic control (ATC) that the plane had hit a large flock of birds, disabling both engines.Several passengers saw the left engine on fire.Sullenberger discussed with ATC the possibilities of either returning to LaGuardia or attempting to land at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. However, he quickly decided neither was feasible, and determined to ditch in the Hudson River.Sullenberger told the passengers to "brace for impact", then piloted the plane to a smooth ditching in the river at about 3:31 P.M.All passengers and crew members survived. He later said, "It was very quiet as we worked, my co-pilot and I. We were a team. But to have zero thrust coming out of those engines was shocking—the silence."Sullenberger checked the plane cabin twice before being the last to evacuate the aircraft.

The Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, said that Sullenberger and his crew will receive the "Key to the City".A fan club dedicated to Sullenberger was created on the social networking website Facebook within hours of the news.U.S. President George W. Bush called Sullenberger to thank him for saving the lives of the passengers,as did President-elect Barack Obama who also invited him to join the presidential inauguration ceremony. On January 16, 2009, the United States Senate passed a Congressional resolution to recognize and honor Sullenberger, co-pilot Jeff Skiles, the crew, passengers and first responders to Flight 1549's emergency landing. The United States House of Representatives passed similar resolutions on January 21, 2009,and January 26, 2009.

On January 22, 2009, Sullenberger, along with the rest of the crew of Flight 1549, was awarded a Masters Medal by the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.A ceremony for Sullenberger was held on January 24, 2009, in his hometown of Danville, California, where he was presented with awards including a framed flag, Danville's "Key to the Town", and named an honorary Danville police officer.San Ramon Valley Fire Chief Richard Price, of the California Fire Department, presented the Captain with the district's highest award, the Medal of Valor, which has only been given a few times in the precinct's history.Sullenberger, Skiles, and Flight 1549's cabin crew, Doreen Walsh, Sheila Dail and Donna Dent, were honored during the Super Bowl XLIII pre-game.Sullenberger has also been awarded with honorary lifetime membership in The Seaplane Pilot's Association

  • Hey, ATC called them 1529 and 1549, and the captain himself called it 1539 :D

  • Wow, it's hard to understand the New York controllers with their accents, talking too fast and blurring words. That plus so many airports in the area, it must not be fun to pilot around there.

  • Why would Teterboro guy get fired, he responded immediately and perfectly. It was the La Guardia guy who got confused trying to communicate, wasting precious seconds.

All respect for the landing, and don't forget credit to the co-pilot who may actually have been flying the plane while the captain communicated and tried to restart engines.

But later analysis showed if they'd turned back immediately while one of them tried to restart engines, they could have landed on a runway.

  • I'm still awestruck that the crew were able to safely land the plane. Anyone the least bit fimiliar with the operation of jet aircraft can easily understand the nearly impossible odds of making such a landing.

I'd like to congratulate the ATC for issuing vectors for 1549 while still maintaining control of all the other aircraft. The mistake of calling the plane 1529 was entirely incosequental. The controller did EXACTLY what he was supposed to do under the most stressful possible circumstances.

  • ATC keeps calling him 1529 again and again...

  • GOD, I AM A PILOT, SULLY WAS SO CALM, ATC KEPT CALLING HIM CACTUS 1529

  • AMAZING ALL SO CALM -- THIS IS NOTHING BUT GOD DOING HIS GOOD WORKS THROUGH THIS PILOT -----

  • Unable....

    We can't do it....

We gonna be in the Hudson...

  • 2:12... ATC controllers hits sheer inner panic~

  • LOL, such a calm pilot. "Runway 1 open for you 1549!". " NO" (lol) . "Ok 1549 what do you need to land?" "We'll be in the Hudson" haha.... the dialogue is mad funny although the pilot is exceptional, bravo mr Sully!
