I get emails from the "banks" all the time. They are always saying that they need my email and other important information. I never believe it because I get the same email from BMO, TD, RBC, and even HSBC.
I once received a scam e-flier via hotmail claiming that it was from TD Canada Trust. It said that to avoid losing large sums of money i needed to enter my account number and 2 pieces of personal identifiable information in the given box. First of all, what large sums of money? Second, the logo they used in their attempt to pose as TD was poorly done (the large pixels clearly showed it was made via Paint). And third, spelling errors.. like really? I'm aware of social engineering buddy.
Scams are very common in E-commerce. When E-bay first started out, it was reliable and could conduct trust worthy transactions. However, as soon as it became popular, it was all down hill from there. For a few years, eBay struggled to regain the trust of their customers (buyers and sellers). I was one of them. I too was an active buyer of the eBay market until I experienced a scam of my own. Today, eBay is more complex to use then ever with tons of laws and regulations.
In present times it is easier to detect the scam emails just because majority of the nigerians that have entered the 419 business did not go to proper high schools so they do not speak good grammar and it is easier to spot in their emails. I once go an email saying i won a certain amount of money and i needed to pick it up by the 1th of july instead of 1st i immediately knew it was a scam MGD 415 UKOH, A
