Hattie McDaniel wins Best Supporting Actress for Gone With The Wind, becoming the first black actor to win an Academy Award.

I found it strange that this wasn't already on YouTube (having been taken down by the previous uploader), and felt this historic moment should be made more accessible.

Clip taken from the 1988 documentary "The Making of a Legend."

  • It is entirely irrelevant whether the speech was written for her, or by her. It is also irrelevant whether she portrayed a "stereotype" or not. She won. Over other white actresses. "Nuff said.

  • Did you know that her speech was written for her? Nothing said was of her own words.

  • Such a classy lady...

  • @SuperLarryF Thanks for sharing.

  • @laarbe LOL but so sad.... the truth is every single black person with the exception of maybe Sidney Poitier that has received one of these bull shhht awards was awarded for playing a stereotype role.... and they looked so happy to be accepted by pinky especially that mother fnnncker C. Gooding jr........

and still only 2 Hispanics have ever got this thing... and only 1 of them was really a Hispanic....

    be blessed...

  • bless her heart. FACT: her handles made her say "the credit to my race" part. RIP to a legend.

  • Hollywood to black women, want to win awards? Know your place!

  • my how far we've come

  • that was a beautiful speech, i almost teared up

  • Not sure that McDaniel paved the way for Lena, Dorothy & Halle to name a few. Lena already made her position clear to the studios about racial sterotyping; and if McDaniel had any influence on Dandridge, Berry etc it was perhaps to fight against the stereotype that Hatty was forced to accept. McDaniel, like StepNFetchit were products & victims of their time, and to their great credit subverted expectations, profitting financially & socially. Historically, their biographies overshadow their work
