Track: On the Chariot of Ares
Throughout the album you're going to notice a theme. I spent a lot of time racking my brain for something interesting or a common thread that all the songs could share - rather than having them just be a collection of techno songs or something mundane - and I finally landed on a dual theme. Mythology and space exploration have been closely linked to each other since humankind looked up and noticed the stars and they're both topics that have fascinated me from the start. So there we have it, now I just needed to make things intertwine without making them tedious for myself or the listener.

So here we have the first track. I sampled the audio from a live feed on NASA's site of the launch of the new Ares rocket earlier in 2010. Ares will replace the old space shuttles eventually and is also the name for the greek god of war. As far as the song goes, I had some haunting samples lying around - the spanish guitar part in particular - and had made a few interesting discoveries with how to deal with samples. You'll notice the guitar part gets chopped, stuttered and then microsampled to a buzz as reverb is added. That's a combination of about 50-60 parameters in Ableton Live being manipulated to arrive at using automation and also something I delved into deeper on other tracks. The piano piece, basslines, pads and other synths were all created using my Access Virus TI.

I noticed while creating the track that some of the intricacy of the sample manipulation was lost at the usual DG tempo so I made the decision that with this album many of the songs would get a chance to "breathe" a little bit and kept the tempos lower. I think this subtle move make the album as a whole a lot more interesting and moody.
