This is the 45 vinyl single hit version of the song, only released briefly on CD, and not currently available digitally (see notes below). There are at least half a dozen extra elements/tracks in the mix/arrangement, giving it a vastly more enriched and powerful sound... an extra guitar line, several extra percussion instruments, extra harmony singing, extra horn tracks, more drum presence, and a hauntingly beautiful reverb during the last bridge measures.
I truly hope they will release this digitally, I've been waiting it seems like forever, and I'll be lining up to buy it!

Edit: Aug 25, 2009 - I see that there is now 'matched content' on this, which is great...! It means that it links to purchasable content on iTunes and Amazon. As I said above, I'd *love* to see this re-released digitally, and this promotion here is part of a wish to get that happening. You will notice listening to both though, that this one and the one for purchase are quite a bit different. Only the album version with limited instrumentals is available right now, and I want to give them a gentle nudge and say, "Hey!... Let us buy the hit version too!"
Hopefully they will do it sometime soon down the line... By all means, buy the album version also (I have it too, it has lots of other cool songs on it as well!)... but even though the vinyl is pretty nice, I still feel like we're lacking something without the digital single being available too... :-)

EDIT: Nov 28, 2009 - Just a lil' update for ya... I just noticed another new thing marked on this vid... says it's blocked in some countries! Such a shame.. but I hope they can still dl it from Amazon or iTunes... it's too good of a ditty to miss!

EDIT: Aug 18, 2010
Greetings again! It now looks like it's marked available for all countries, so here's hoping this is progress for getting Johnny more sales and promotion.. here's certainly earned it for the legacy of enrichment he has given to the music world!
Here is also hoping this means maybe there is some motion happening on getting this version released again too.. *applause to the record company!* (and thanks for letting youtube continue to promo the record here!)

Edit: December 2010
I just crossed paths with another one of those wondrous occurrences that happens every once in a while....
A terrifically helpful person here on YouTube turned me on to some Great Info about this tune!!!
After buying several copies of this, on vinyl AND cd AND digital, I had come to the conclusion that this was one of those cases where there was just ONE copy out there that was considered to be the only needed release of this, and That was That.
...but!..... it turns out that somewhere along the way, this Richly Mixed version HAS actually been released!!! (and is, alas, out of print at the moment)... It was on "The Sounds of the 70s - 1973 - Take Two" by Time-Life ... sure enough, I went to Amazon and bought a used copy, and voila!!! All the tracks!! ^__^ I am So Stoked!! Some are moved around to different channels, but they all seem to be there :)
So I will leave this version up here (from vinyl) as long as it's accepted as a link/promo for sales/exposure of his music, and who knows... maybe they will re-release this again ... so that it is in print once again.. Till then, keep an eye out for that old collection!
This is the best upload of 'Stir It Up' that I've heard.
Thanx for the upload.
I've not been able to listen to this since some a hole stole my copy from a party in the 70's :'(

@Alethia25 You are so welcome! I love this version the best, too... to this day, I still listen to it several times a week :)

I recall being told in 1972 that Bob Marley and the Wailers contributed to this recording of the song, but NOT to the alternate album version. There may have been some legal reasons this one was hidden away after the single. At the time labels were really touchy about who recorded for whom.

@notholding2 Like WOW. That could definitely explain the different distribution zones/times... this was pretty much the only version we heard on the radio during the time it was a hit record on the west coast, just mucho mucho hard to find nowadays.
Indeed it wouldn't be the first time contract issues have resulted in new recordings which supplanted the originals. "I will always love you" by Dolly Parton and "Wildfire" by Michael Martin-Murphey are some that come to mind right off hand...
