The award winning e-reader from Amazon, the Amazon Kindle launched it's 3G and Wifi versions in the UK in 2010, now just a few months later it has become the e-reader of choice for the UK consumer, there's not a train, underground or bus journey where you won't see the sleekly designed device.
So, what's so special about the new Amazon Kindle,......well apart from it's lightweight design and good looks, the Kindle has a high-contrast E Ink screen making it as close as you'd get to reading a regular paper book, even in bright sunlight there is no glare on the screen. With more than 550,000 books available to download directly over-the-air to the device, with each book being available on your device within 60 seconds, it's a good job that the Kindle can hold up to 3,500 books.
From a connectivity point of view, there are two version available, the 3G/Wifi and the Wifi only. There's no contract with the 3G/Wifi version and with the extra flexibility it gives, we'd say that it's well worth the small extra upfront investment for this model.
The battery life of the Kindle is outstanding, with up to one month of life from a single charge. If wifi is left on, then it's battery life would be shorter, but that's entirely up to the user and easy to manage directly from the device.
The Kindle's capabilities do not stop at storing thousands of books and PDF's, as it also has a built-in Web-Kit based browser, meaning that while on wifi users can browse the web.
So, why is the Amazon Kindle of interest to us here at Absolute Radio, well apart from it being a game changing technology, it also has the ability to playback audio books plus store and playback other audio content, meaning that podcasts from the likes of Frank Skinner, Dave Gorman and Christian O'Connell can be downloaded via your PC/Laptop directly to the Amazon Kindle and enjoyed via it's built-in speakers or headphones when taking a break from reading, negating the need to have multiple devices.
So next time you see a smile and a pair of headphones plugged into an Amazon Kindle, the listener isn't necessarily strange.....just listening to one of the many podcast downloads that are available from absoluteradio.co.uk/podcasts.
