You can actually go up to the greenhouse and shoot at Hector. Despite the fact that you do have to shoot the water tank to end the game, you'd be missing out on some dialog if you don't go up to the greenhouse first.

at 10 years old I cried my eyes out at the end of this game, it was a truly great ending. and at 16 years old now I tried to run this game on my Windows 7 PC and when it said it wouldn't work I was depressed for days. Love this game to bits.

Whatever he did is not important in the least. It is all about the journey he has in the Land of the Dead, his 4 year journey of the soul.
He may not even know what he did in life, actually.
