Red Jumpsuit Apparatus: Your Guardian Angel - STRING TRIO COVER (1 violin, 2 violas)
This is the 10th video in my continuing series of classicalized popular music. The song was requested by my most special friend Pamela. I originally played a short version of this as a violin solo to surprise her for valentines day knowing she likes the song, she sings it to me frequently :) Then I decided to make it into a trio you see in this video. The original video of the song may be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GuX-F08fwI
This performance is the 5th of my split screen videos where I play with myself, and the 1st where I play a trio with myself. To do this video, I listened to the original song and by ear wrote out a sheet music score, then arranged it as a trio for violin and 2 violas, and then performed it. I recorded each part separately, first the violas, then the violin. I was able to sync up and mix the 3 parts on my computer with a sound wave editor. To do the split screen, I used AviSynth (scripting based video editing and effects utility) in combination with VirtualDubMod (a free video editing utility) to sync up and render the two videos into a single split screen video. The sound then had to be synced to the 3 videos playing simultaneously and properly mixed. My AviSynth script for this video:
violin = crop(AVISource("K:\RedJump_GuardianAngel\Movie_00_(d.09-03-03_14-23.00).avi"),176,0,-134,0)
viola1 = crop(AVISource("K:\RedJump_GuardianAngel\Movie_01_(d.09-03-02_19-16.00_).avi"),114,60,-216,240)
viola2 = crop(AVISource("K:\RedJump_GuardianAngel\Movie_02_(d.09-03-02_16-07.00).avi"),84,64,-246,236)
violas = StackVertical(viola1,AddBorders(viola2,0,4,0,0,$000000))
video = StackHorizontal(violin,AddBorders(crop(violas,4,0,0,0),4,0,0,0,$000000))
audio = WAVSource("K:\RedJump_GuardianAngel\RJA_YourGuardianAngel_MIX.wav")
AudioDub(video, audio)
Trim(0,6899)
FadeOut(240)
Other technical considerations: Finding a proper format to upload to youtube in high quality format has been a nightmare. Most Xvid, Divx, Mpeg1, Mpeg2, Mpeg4, and H264 codecs in various bitrates gave poor results in my tests. All very glitchy. What I eventually uploaded was 640x480 H264/AVC in an MP4 container at a bitrate of 4080kbps -- converted by: "Super (Version 35)". I am not happy with the video qulaity, it is clearer than in the past, but it is jittery, like watching an old film. If someone knows the secret to getting vids to look good in HQ, share it with me. The cracking you hear periodically is mostly the creaky floor, some of it is my camera ... its been through hell and back, but it mostly works still. The audio is crackly intermittently, the video is ghosty ... so buy me one of those new hi-def cameras ... only about $3,500 for a half way decent one :)
For those that do not know what a viola is, its basically like the violin but bigger and lower sounding. It plays 5 notes or about half an octave lower than a violin, on the notes it shares with violin the viola sounds deeper, and it reads a different clef (alto) for its sheet music. Description of a viola for violinists: "A big honkin violin, missing the E string at the top of the range and gaining a C string at the bottom of the range and reads a funny looking clef". Also, in a survival situation, the viola would be preferred, as it burns longer. The viola (1 + 2) in this video (right side frame top and bottom) is just a Knilling student model, 17 inch.
Violas for the win!!!!!! Amazing!!!!

its nice to see that at least red sox fans are more talented than the team itself.
