Learn French 16 : The deck of cards

A deck of cards
= un jeu de cartes

a card = une carte

spade = pique
heart = cœur
diamond = carreau
clubs = trèfle

ace = as (♂)
deuce = 2 (deux)
3 = trois
4 = quatre
5 = cinq
6 = six
7 = sept
8 = huit
9 = neuf
10 = dix
(in terms of cards the numbers are always masculine)
jack (knave) = valet (♂)
queen = dame (or reine) (♀)
king = roi (♂)

Solution to the test :
- le trois de trèfle
- l'as de coeur
- le valet de carreau
- le roi de pique
- la dame de cœur
- le dix de trèfle
- le sept de pique

Merci à tous ^_^

  • in the description you say:"

    A deck of cards

    = un jeu de cartes"

    shouldnt it be "un jeu DES cartes" since cartes is plural?

  • no cuz here "de" is a preposition which stands for "of"

  • but i thought de + les = des

  • do you say "the deck of the cards"? NO, you don't. so there's no "de les"

  • out of curiosity... why does la reine have a "D" and not an "R"?

  • the D stands for "Dame"

    actually I made a slight mistake in the vid: in french we tend to use "dame" more than "reine". "Reine" is acceptable too though! I guess it helps to differentiate with the "R" of Roi.

    thanx for your question which helped me realize...

  • J'ai une question. Comment dit-on « face cards » en français ?

  • a deck is a group word so it is understood that cards is plural. a group of people/a group of the people...alot of things/alot of the things...a murder of crows/a murder of the crows...a deck of cards/a deck of the cards

  • On dit aussi le fou ou le mat (vient du tarot de marseille celui la).

  • it's un jeu de cartes,

    game OF cards not deck of the cards,

  • Wow, great video :).

    I've enjoyed all of your videos to be honest, but the try to remember the cards thing was great. A quick and easy method to memorize them :P. Also, it's refreshing to hear a French accent instead of a French Canadian one. My french teacher is from quebec and pronounces things really strangely >_>.

  • peut être parler du cavalier dans le jeu de tarot ?

    et completer par le synonyme de "la reine" = la dame.

    :)
